The Nokia 5310 XpressMusic is a great little music phone. It’s small, it’s light and at only 9.9mm it’s very, very flat.

The design is fantastic. The two strips of red aluminium on each side of the modern black casing give it a cool 80’s retro look; think Michael Jackson circa Bad or Thriller; think A-Team van; think Michael Knight and Kit. You get the idea.

But the 5310 takes it’s music very seriously. It includes a dedicated audio chip to provide you with rich, crystal clear sound reproduction. The 30MB internal memory is modest, but popping in a MicroSD card will soon take care of that. It supports cards of up to 4GB, equalling the capacity of an iPod nano.

The dedicated music keys are easily accessible on the front left of the handset making play/pause and switching tracks a doddle. The 5310 has all the major formats covered as it supports MP3, MP4, AAC, eAAc+, and WMA music files. It also supports playlists and album art, and features a standard 3.5mm headphone jack so can use the stereo headphones provided or your favourite alternatives. The 5310 will function as an RDS enabled FM stereo and, what’s more, it will keep you juiced up to your music for up to 20 hours at a time.

Aside from the sound, the Nokia 5310 also incorporates a capable 2MP camera and a tidy, 2 inch, 16 million colour screen. It supports USB 2.0 through its micro USB port and the Bluetooth (v2.0) includes A2DP compatibility for streaming audio to bluetooth headsets.
